10-year-old standing on sidewalk fatally hit by SUV driven by teen; 12-year-old also hit

An SUV driven by a 17-year-old fatally struck one child and injured another before hitting a home near Prices Corner on Monday afternoon, according to New Castle County police.

A maroon Hyundai Santa Fe heading west on Faulkland Road toward Centreville Road crossed the double-yellow line and the opposite lane of travel before hitting a 10-year-old boy and a 12-year-old boy, who were standing on the sidewalk, police said. The SUV then struck a home on the southwest corner of Faulkland Road.

Officers and Emergency Medical Services responded to the 2400 block of Faulkland Road shortly after 4 p.m.

The 10-year-old boy was taken to Nemours Children's Hospital, where he later died.

The 12-year-old boy also was taken to Nemours, where he was treated and released.

The 17-year-old driver, who was injured, was taken to Christiana Hospital, where he was treated and released.

The New Castle County Division of Police Traffic Services Unit is investigating the crash.
